Montessori Curriculum at Heather Grove - a British nursery for children aged 0-5

A calm, child-led Montessori journey for ages 0–5

Our Montessori curriculum nurtures curiosity at a British nursery for children aged 0-5.

What Montessori looks like at Heather Grove (ages 0–5)

We are a British nursery serving children aged 0–5 and follow authentic Montessori principles adapted for early years in the UK. We follow authentic Montessori principles while honouring the rhythms of childhood. The classroom is carefully prepared with real, child-sized materials that invite purposeful work, deep concentration, and joyful discovery.

Children choose activities from key Montessori areas-practical life, sensorial, early language, mathematics, and cultural studies-developing independence, coordination, and a sense of responsibility in a peaceful setting-appropriate for ages 0-5.

Practical Life

Pouring, washing, sweeping, food preparation, and care of plants & animals help children build coordination, focus, and a sense of contribution to their community.

Sensorial & Language

Materials isolate qualities like size, colour, texture, and sound, strengthening the senses and laying the groundwork for rich vocabulary, early writing, and a love of stories.

Early Maths & Culture

Hands-on materials introduce quantity, sequencing, patterns, and number symbols, alongside maps, nature study, and seasonal projects that connect children to the wider world.

Our Montessori approach in practice

Every decision-from the height of the shelves to the tone of voice we use-is guided by Montessori principles and respect for each child’s unique timeline of development.

  • Child-led choices within a thoughtfully prepared environment

  • Mixed-age groups that encourage peer learning and empathy

  • Observation-led planning instead of one-size-fits-all lessons

  • Real, purposeful tasks that connect learning to everyday life

  • Uninterrupted work cycles that protect deep concentration

A gentle, predictable daily rhythm

Our timetable honours Montessori’s long, uninterrupted work cycles while creating a warm, predictable flow that helps young children feel secure.

Arrival & settling

A warm welcome, self-chosen greeting routine, and simple jobs help children transition calmly from home to nursery.

Montessori work cycle

A 2-3 hour uninterrupted period where children choose materials, repeat activities, and receive individual or small-group presentations.

Outdoor & movement

Daily time in our garden for gross motor play, nature observation, and caring for plants in all weathers.

Meals, rest & stories

Family-style meals, cosy rest spaces, and unhurried story times end the session on a calm, connected note.

Montessori classroom with low shelves, plants, and natural light

A calm, nature-inspired space

Our classrooms are light, ordered, and homely rather than busy or overstimulating. Natural materials, soft colours, and plants invite children to move slowly and carefully as they work.

  • Low, open shelves arranged by curriculum area

  • Child-sized furniture that supports independence

  • Real glass, crockery, and tools used with care

  • Cosy reading corners and quiet spaces to rest

  • Direct access to our garden and outdoor classroom

Curriculum questions parents often ask

If you’re new to Montessori or simply curious about how it works in a nursery setting, these answers will help. We’re always happy to talk through your child’s specific needs too.

Will my child still be ready for primary school with a Montessori curriculum?

Yes. Montessori offers a rich preparation for primary school by building strong foundations in language, early maths, concentration, and independence. By the time they leave Heather Grove, most children can confidently manage self-care, follow multi-step instructions, focus on tasks for sustained periods, and engage with early literacy and numeracy at a level appropriate to their development.

How do you balance child-led learning with structure?

We provide a clear, consistent daily rhythm and carefully teach children how to use and care for the materials. Within that container, they are free to choose their work, repeat as long as they wish, and move around the room respectfully. Educators observe closely and offer new presentations when a child is ready, rather than forcing them through a fixed timetable of activities.

Is there time for creativity, play, and friendship?

Absolutely. Creativity and play are woven throughout the day—through open-ended art, music and movement, role play, outdoor exploration, and simple celebrations of seasonal festivals. Mixed-age groups and grace & courtesy lessons support kind, respectful friendships and give children the tools to navigate social situations.

How do you support children who are shy, sensitive, or very active?

Montessori environments are designed to be calm and predictable, which is especially helpful for sensitive children. We offer quiet spaces and gentle transitions. For very active children, there is plenty of purposeful movement—carrying, sweeping, outdoor work—so they can channel energy into meaningful tasks while learning to regulate their bodies over time.

See our Montessori classrooms in person

The best way to understand our curriculum is to step into the room, watch the children at work, and talk with our Montessori educators.

We’ll walk you through a typical day, share how we track progress, and leave plenty of time for your questions.
